Historical and legendary figure

Path and reputation
Luang Pu Thuad is the legendary saint of the Thai deep south, associated with Wat Chang Hai (วัดช้างให้) in Pattani. His story sits in two distinct registers, and it is important to keep them apart.
The first register is hagiography. Traditional accounts place him in the Ayutthaya period, around 2125 BE (1582), and hold that he once stepped into the sea and turned the saltwater fresh. These are devotional traditions rather than documented history; the dates and the miracle belong to the biography the tradition tells, not to a verified record, and they should be read that way.
The second register is documented and modern. The first amulets bearing his image were created at Wat Chang Hai in 2497 BE (1954) by Ajahn Tim Dhammatharo (อาจารย์ทิม ธัมมธโร), following what temple tradition describes as a vision. That 2497 edition is the documented starting point of the LP Thuad amulet tradition, and it became one of the most worn images in Thailand. In devotional understanding, LP Thuad amulets are linked with khlaeo khlat (แคล้วคลาด), escape from harm; that association is what the tradition holds them to do.

Legacy
The modern LP Thuad tradition dates from the 2497 BE (1954) Wat Chang Hai first batch, and from there it grew into one of the most recognizable devotional images in the country. Wat Chang Hai has continued to issue annual editions, and other temples have produced their own flat-iron back tributes to the same figure.
For a reader, the useful distinction is the one between the Ayutthaya-period biography and the 1954-onward amulet tradition. The former is traditional account, carried by generations of southern devotion. The latter is documented fact, beginning with Ajahn Tim's work at Wat Chang Hai. Holding both in view, without collapsing one into the other, is the honest way to understand why LP Thuad matters so widely across Thailand.
