Why it matters

Wat Khao Or is the seat of the most famous southern Thai esoteric academy. For generations the Khao Or school has trained both monks and lay masters in wicha (วิชา), the sacred arts, and it remains a defining center of that tradition.

On the temple grounds is the Chatthan cave (ถ้ำฉัตรทันต์บรรพต), where Sao Ha (เสาร์ห้า), the auspicious "Saturday the Fifth" consecration timing, is observed. The school's signature substances are distinctive: mercury (ปรอท), luk om (ลูกอม) made from black sticky rice, the small held pellet amulet, and wan 108 (ว่าน ๑๐๘), the compound of 108 sacred herbs. Its annual Wai Khru (ไหว้ครู), the rite of honoring teachers, produces the school's most iconic objects. Ajahn Plian Hatthayannon is the current lay chairman.

What to see

The Chatthan cave is the heart of the site, along with the temple grounds themselves.

Nearby is the ancestral hall at Wat Don Sala, which belongs to the same lineage story and is worth understanding as part of a visit.

Etiquette

Visitors should be respectful of the esoteric nature of the tradition. This is an active academy, not a tourist attraction, and it should be approached in that spirit.

Access
